That is what the LED whale clipper is for. The light shines through the nail from behind, so the pink quick shows up clearly against the clear part and you know exactly where to stop. It also has a small baffle that catches the clipping instead of firing it across the room. The other three designs are simpler, smaller tools for pets with thin nails or owners who just want something quick and unintimidating to hold.

The four designs:
Whale - the LED one. Light shines through the nail so you can see the quick, plus a catch baffle for clippings. Runs on 3 x LR44 button batteries. Comes in light coffee, light blue and peach.
Banana Mini - a compact plain clipper with a spring handle. No light. Yellow, green or purple.
Donut - ring-shaped body with a guarded opening that limits how much nail you can take in one go. Green or pink.
Little Bear - rounded safety-scissor style with blunt outer edges, the gentlest of the four for squirmy pets and kittens. Brown, yellow or pink.

How to use:
Sit somewhere with good light and let your pet settle before you start
Hold the paw and press gently on the pad to extend the nail
On the Whale, switch the light on and look for the pink quick inside the nail
Trim only the clear tip, staying well short of the pink
Do a couple of nails at a time rather than all of them at once, especially early on
